Many forums get really hyped up for holidays through out the year, and then others don't seem to know it's even a holiday. What does your forum do to celebrate holidays like Halloween, Christmas, etc.? Does the location of most of your members have an effect on anything?
We usually have small things, nothing to big honestly. We may have a few simple contests, competitions, and we sometimes decorate our logo. For Halloween, we are having a costume (profile decoration) contest, and we may be decorating the logo. My forum is a sports forum primarily based on American sports, which means most members are American, so we really only do things for holidays that are widely celebrated in America, such as Halloween and Christmas.
If I am only gone for a day or two I leave my forum open for traffic. But if I plan to be away for longer than 3 days I put a notice on the forum that states that we're closed for holidays. It really just depends what holiday you're talking about!
Then we have events in the roleplaying game and outside of it relating to holidays, like last year we had a secret santa. We'll probably do that again.
Yeah I think if you're a new forum you should allow traffic to flow even if you're not active. I see that active forums would have a reason to close up shop because of vulnerability to be hacked when not paying attention.
