Oh the horror! Our microwave died today. Just died. No warning!
I'll be ordering a new one tomorrow when the appliance store opens up and it's above the range, so I'm going to pay to have them install it so I know it's safe. What a pain.
I've actually never had one die and I've only ever owned two. I got rid of the first one because the the door seal didn't look too healthy and a test confirmed it was leaking microwaves.
I've never been a fan of built in appliances so getting a replacement was no big deal but as someone who uses a microwave most days I can imagine the pain of having to employ a qualified person to make the swap. Around these parts you would be lucky to get someone within a month.
Buy another. Although, these days I could do without. I am good with the traditional oven, and new products like air fryers and countertop ovens are looking like they are just as versatile without turning your food into hot lava with a cold center, lol.
I've never had this problem before. Have three microwaves at my house at the moment. All work perfectly fine. One of them I got when I started college and moved into a dorm room. 🙂

This microwave was almost as old as you....it was 17 years. I guess it lived a good, long life. Whirlpool brand, we'll be buying that brand to replace it. It's over the range, so I want someone to install it...that's another $99.
We have a spare one laying around. My wife bought a nice one that she one a ways back so if it were to break, we'd just swap it out for the old one we had before that.
