When you want to join a webmaster or an admin forum, what do you look for before you join it? Is it members, activity, certain modifications, or something else?
If it's modifications, which one and if it's activity, how active should it be before you join?
It should be active to the point it has a few thousand interesting posts that are reguarly added from atleast a small base of active members, I like joining webmaster and admin forums but I try to only join ones that have a decent amount of activity. I do not want to join ones that I make a thread or post and two weeks later there has been no replies or any that have 4 posts and nothing interesting for me to talk about. I also prefer them to be attractive and user friendly run with extreme care and attention from the staff there, If the forum looks like the admin has put little to no effort into it then I won't join and I am pretty sure many others won't either.
Seems to me like the whole promotion forum fad is dying down and is being replaced with "Admin forums" which seem to be basically the same thing but with a little more substance.
Anyway what I look for is a place to discuss different aspects of admin'ing/moderating a forum, a promotion section & an off topic section. Those seem to be the only sections I participate in on these forums.
This I haven't seen many people say about a forum before, I quite liked that.

Could this be because many of the admin forums offer promotion as-well as discussion? Instead of a forum dedicated to just advertising, an admin forum can have a vast majority of topics.
I look for activity, services, current resources, such as articles and appearance. In addition, a team/staff that treats all members with respect. This goes two ways, a member should also be respectful to the team and other members too.
I don't look for heaps of posts per say as Shady does, what I look at is the layout. I know it is hard to be unique when everyone has been done, but when you have the same boards as another board, that turns me right off. Same with having many forums, that are basically on the same thing.
Example on that last point is when people have forums for Adsense and then a Google SEO discussion forum or something for other PPC services, especially when it is just starting.
Also, I'm going to sound superficial for saying this, but when a forum just has a terrible look to it, I click out of it almost immediately. If something hurts my eyes or is unreadable, I will not stick around.

I think your comment is just fine, I too am the same way. This said, my perspective on a board's looks may not be the same as another. I understand your point though and it's true. The first attention grabber is the look as you enter the forum/site.
