I have volunteers on my forum at the moment. If you have a point system installed on your forum, you could pay them virtual cash for services on the forum etc.

Well, what it boils down to is whether or not the member wants to be staff for fun, and for the experience, or whether or not they think they have to get paid to do a job.

Sure, there are people that would rather get paid to be staff, but even then you will run into people who will do the absolute minimum even when they are paid.

I personally don't like paying staff, if I don't have to.

I pay my staff members forum cash. I don't mind paying them if they are active and works hard.

Virtual currency is okay to be used for payment although real money should not. It's nice to have a little incentive whilst working hard for the community.

This is generally something I like to do, although it is not necessary in many circumstances. I think it does make senior staff feel appreciated, and can definitely boost morale.

I really only pay my forum staff if I'm making a profit from my forum. Then I just randomly share it with them, but it's not really consistently paying them. But at the same time, I don't give them too much cause I'd rather use it to improve the community or use it to pay for giveaways and things.

If you ever want to get serious, and get a lot of work done on a consistent and reliable basis, you need to pay your staff. Sure, some people will volunteer either because they like the recognition or just want to help out; but that spirit doesn't last forever.

I feel like it all depends on your genera, and how serious you are about your forum, as pandaa mentioned.

If you have a more serious forum that handles a lot of paying customers, by all means paid staff is reasonable. However, if you just have a smaller general chat forum for fun, the only thing paying staff is going to do is lose you more money. Forums are expensive enough as it is, there's really not a lot of room to drop more money unless you are actively making money.

As for virtual currency, I see no problem with it, but from me I would see no point in it unless I could get rewards worth actual money from the currency.

I don't pay my staff since they aren't really active. My forum is pretty much dead so I don't see the point in paying them until it gets more active.
