Personally as a free forum software I love it. Basic layout, ACP is simple to work with yet hard to master (in a fair way, though) and I like it overall. The only reason I use phpbb is that not many people are MyBB fans, my tech administration included.
MyBB was exceptional back in the day. I used it for many years. I do hope they're building responsive themes for it now, otherwise, it's not gonna fly with the huge emphasis put on mobile-friendliness in the past years. But a robust piece of software.
The design implemented for MyBB are cute and beautiful and could serve you for best software and also contains most of basic features for post and interact between most of the users.
MyBB is or should say good for its day. But as time goes on they are sow and slacking allot. I mean who still use them and you as a owner got to put i the work

It is similar to PHPBB but there is a lot of change in the algorithm but the functionnalities still the same here or there means the same thing in the both sides.
I remember it blowing my mind when it was first released as it seemed like it had all the comfort features everyone wanted and was free! It rapidly became a 1:1 decision compared to the dominant vB software and that free price tag really helped it overcome some of the lack of features. Granted I have been less and less impressed with it over the years as it does not seem to have evolved very much and IMO it actually looks like they even stepped backward in some features, but I can't say I have monitored them much over the years.
It's good but it would have been great if it's responsive. Even the updates take a lot of time to get released but still, it's a very good free forum software.
It's the only forum software I've ever used. But yeah, there are a lot of complaints that the development is stagnant. I'm familiar with it and will continue to use it, mostly because it's free.
I like it a lot. It seems to have more mods than phpBB. Nonetheless, I chose to go with XenForo for my biggest project cause I already have some licenses.
Well, I have used MyBB before, so I have worked with it hands-on.
Having used MyBB since the start, I used to love the software and use it daily. Updates happened and I started to use Xenforo, never went back to MyBB whatsoever. It’s great for a free option obviously, but I know development is very sluggish nowadays.
While I understand the development of anything for MyBB is simply down to volunteers giving up their time for it and therefore nothing can really be asked of anyone, it's going to become a real problem on the plugin side of things by the end of this year as most hosts are discontinuing php7 support, and a lot of the plugins are not compatible with php8. My site is being moved onto php8 in three days and I already know the majority of my plugins are going to stop working and I will have to disable them until they are fixed, and I wonder how many plugins there are that are going to stop working once php7 is no longer an option for any host.
I really love MyBB and think it has stood its ground for many years. However, there were times when I enjoyed XF, IPB, and others more than it but that was many years ago now. At some point I would like to fork MyBB and create something out of it because of how reliable and documented the software is.
I haven't used MyBB in a while but I have used it in the past. I always look at it as being a great alternative to say Xenforo if you are looking for something similar to that but free.
MyBB would be my first choice if I were to start a forum and wanted to use free software.
Depends on what problems you're referring to. Updating the software or even the plugins requires pretty extensive coding knowledge that those complaining may not know. I'd love to fix all the plugins on my board that aren't going to work on PHP8 that haven't been updated by the creators, but I don't know the language at all because until now I have never needed to deal with PHP first-hand. If it wasn't for compatibility issues with PHP8 I still wouldn't have a reason to look at the coding because nothing would be requiring attention due to it all working still.
Well HF was my inspiration to go for MyBB. I think its still one of the best free solutions available in the market. Ofcourse it doesn't have that much development going on, plugins and themes are not being updated etc, but We can't except too much from an open source project, Developers are not getting paid for this.
