I am seeking opinions on the name Dexter. I have been asking a few, and some people love it (I do) and some people hate it. What do you think of it?

It means: From an occupational surname meaning "one who dyes" in Old English. It also coincides with the Latin word dexter meaning "right-handed, skilled".

Yes for me 🙂 it's an cool name and I like the sound of the name

The first thing most people in the US at least are going to think when they see the name is the TV show that goes by that name and the star character in that show who also happens to be named Dexter. I probably wouldn't encourage anyone to use it unless you are some sort of fan of that show because anything that the name might stand/stood for has essentially been hijacked by that show.

I'll always think of it as the guy from episode two of Star Wars that knew everything. For that reason - I think that it's pretty cool.

I actually kinda like the name by itself. It's kinda cool. I don't know anyone in real life with that name. Only heard of it on TV.

@Bluezone777: I'm definitely not from the US, and the first thing I think of in recent years when I hear the name is the "Dexter" TV show. For those that don't know, Dexter is a serial killer who channels his psychotic tendencies to only kill the guilty. He's sort of an anti-hero, but it's an association that I wouldn't be too fond of.

Years ago, it was Dexter's Laboratory that I associated with it. I loved that show when I was a kid XD.

It is an OK name. Though I don't imagine I would be giving that name to any of my future sons, unless it seems like a good fit.

I met a guy with that name once, but didn't know the meaning(s) behind it until I read this thread. But at what are you looking to name? a person? a thing? If is for a person, Does it sound fluent with the last name? (lol.. if for a new born, what about if he becomes left-handed lol...)
If I like it? yes, it is short, easy to remember, I like the meanings you mentioned.

Reminds me of the Cartoon Network show. XD It's a cool name.

I personally hate that name. It sounds ugly to me. But then again I associate the name with a terrible person I used to know who's name was Dexter.
