What former free message board services did you use?

I used mostly invisionfree and zetaboards, and other message board services that used IPB, although I forgot which one they were now. I was part of that invisionfree/zetaboards community in the late 2000's/early 2010's before they merged with tapatalk LOL

I remember waaaay back when phpBB2 was a thing and ForumUP existed. Gosh that brings back memories.

Man phpBB2 it's like it was just yesterday

No offense, but I tried out pretty much all the free forum software back then and PHPBB was by far the most basic lol

Yeah, but that was the beauty of it, because then you could install MODs! 😂

I primarily used ProBoards as that is where I started, but I moderated/administrated a number of forums that used all types of different free forum hosts. Some examples that come to mind are FreeForums.org, ZetaBoards, Forumotion, and more. There were also a couple of sister sites to ProBoards back then. I believe they used modified versions of YaBB, which is what ProBoards was using at one point as well.

I used ipb really briefly when there was a free version. I don't remember much about my experience but I remember sort of enjoying it.

You mean, IPB 1.3? Yeah it was free once IPB 2.0 came out, but I believe the license agreement on it states that it was only free if it was used as software for other boards instead of a sole usage. (Or something to that extent)

This was years ago. Like 2007/2008-ish? So I no longer remember details. Ipb was free at one time though

Even though I have stuck with ProBoards, my very first software was Xorbit, where over time support for their software became little to none. Unsurprisingly they aren't around any more and I jumped ship from them long before that ship sunk around march 2002.

I'm not technical so my forum is on Proboards. I don't have the know-how to get a domain, host, etc. When I had another forum some 15 years ago, I DID try a paid one. But I was in over my head. Then I found Proboards. The ease of use was just what I needed. My goal however, is to have a paid forum. I'd have to learn a lot more or have extra help in order to do so.

I used Proboards so many years ago and really enjoyed it, and meet a lot people I'm still friends with today. I also used Hyperboards which was started by Adam from Proboards, that was basically PB V2 with some enhancements.

Wow, blast from the past. I think any skill I have any design was born in those days as there was a huge competition for designers to come up with the most "sleek" designs I remember. Tt was a lot of fun despite the cliques that formed across forum skin shops.

All of the services and design sites I can remember off the top of my head, any sound familiar?
  1. Forumer
  2. fMods
  3. InkDrop Styles
  4. miserablestory
Wish I could remember more.

My very 1st Message Board was on Xorbit (around 2001 But i never deleted it but I kept it but than Xorbit shut down 2008??), Than I went to Proboards ( Started around 2004 or 2004 ) after that I went on to invisionfree. When invisionfree ended I went back to Proboards stayed ever since ! If I would do it all over again I should stayed with Proboards never jumped around !
