We had worked with vBulletin previously and decided to give Xenforo a shot when starting the new site. vB went in a direction that we didn't like with vB5. It is quite restrictive, so we went shopping around.
Actually, we were intending to maybe go with nodebb for a while, but situation changed for us and we needed something that people with less technical knowledge could manage. We do have coders back on board the project, but we had to make a decision at the time that didn't rely too much on one person.
There are new, modern looking softwares such as nodebb, discourse and flarum popping up that could be the future of foruming, but we shall see.
