Guys I'm in quite a dilemma right now, me and my co-owner are going to make a forum, but we can't get on an agreement of what forum software to use, it's either going to be mybb or phpbb please vote in the poll. Also give reasons why. Thanks!

phpBB, it has more and better mods IMO

Why do you think they are better? MyBB supports one click install plugins meaning you don't have to do any work to make the forum the way you want it. There is hardly any phpBB MODs you get that you don't for MyBB.

phpBB Cash MOD - MyBB MYPS or NewPoints
phpBB Karma MOD - MyBB Reputation / Thank You/Like System
phpBB Custom Pages (requires new files to be done) - MyBB Page Manager
phpBB Staff Application - MyBB Form Manager (create as many forms as you want)

MyBB 1.6 also has Thread Prefixes as default, phpBB doesn't. Default Post Template is more easier to install than phpBB as you do not need to do any file edits. You can set forum permissions for groups in one page, while phpBB requires you to go through each group to set forum permissions.

So from that you can probably guess that I think you should go with MyBB. Feel free to share that with your partner 😉

I recently switched to MyBB and I found it easier on the admin end and I found it easier to install stuff for the forum than on phpbb. When I tried to install a mod on phpbb 3, it resulted in a syntax error and I couldn't figure out what I did wrong and I couldn't figure out how to restore my back up, but when I switched over to Mybb, it's been easy. I've been able to install an anti-spam mod and made my forum SEO. I know that's a torture mod on phpbb 3.

So my personal opinion would be to go with Mybb. Plus, I found out you have some tags already in the default install, like youtube tag was already there. I didn't know that right away.

And I was able to get the spoiler tag with a plugin which was very easy to setup. All I had to do was upload a file to the plugin folder and activate the plugin and the spoiler tags was activated.

So like I was saying, just my opinion, I'd go with Mybb.

Out of the two, MyBB easily. But for designing, you'll find much better themes for phpBB.

Could not have said it better! 😀

MyBB 1.6 is awesome, just try it out, you will fall in love with it after just a few minutes. The installation of the mods and the management of all the users and group is so easy!

Just my $0.02
