I can get XenForo or the multitude of free forum software out there. Anyway, I was thinking of MyBB or XenForo. Also, I was considering a paid mobile friendly theme - for whatever software I get.

Anyway, though, despite the passion for MyBB, I do like Milk Themes quite a bit for phpBB.

If you have plans to make money or sell in near future - go with Xenforo or IPS.
If you want to just pass your time and need some hobby project - go with MyBB, SMF, Vanilla etc.

Don't recommend SMF. It is more than a decade old. Just like using XP these days.

COmes down to what you rather work and feel comfort with

This is more about other people than me. It's their project (kind of like a car restoration or something). Well, I guess modifying XenForo can be as fun as MyBB

SMF is still quite a good forum system though yes it is a bit dated but does work well, i would recommend using a more modern forum system ie IPS and Xenforo if you are going to make money, or earn, there is many free alternatives such as WPForo along with Buddypress with wordpress, MyBB and PHPBB which are the most common free ones that are widely used at the moment.

SMF is still quite a good forum system

How many SMF forums do you run ?

PS : I am not challenging you. There could be serious bugs when the software was made a decade back. No patch can fix it. If so, they will still be using PHP 1.0 with security patches.

I used to run SMF but now run more IPS as it has the features i need built into it instead of having addons / plugins. I know they do keep there latest version upto date as possible with patches, i think december they released 2.0.17 with security bug fixes etc.

SMF was my fast forum based software that I used. Six months later IPS

I can only repeat my PHP 1.0 security patches example 🙂

By that logic not just SMF, but even MyBB and PHPBB remains the same design UX failure. And logically people should buy either IPS, Xenforo and Vanilla instead.

If you are asking me,

Who said anything about UI/UX ? It is about possible security issues in a very old software. MyBB is not that old. As for phpBB, they had a major version within the last 12 months.

IF you are willing to spend a little bit of money on top of the software licensing fee, I would recommend XenForo, with a appropriate theme for the type of website it was geared towards. I could recommend a few addons if you want suggestions in that department.

I always recommend XenForo, but it’s important to know what you are getting yourself into. The concept of free styles and add-ons has become less and less common. You’re going to spend a pretty penny getting your forum set up. While the software itself is under $200, you’ll find that there are add-ons that are more expensive than the XenForo software itself.

I would Recommend MyBB as Free one I love IPB although it cost a bit more then Xenforo

MyBB is design mess. Not just that it is extremely ugly. Only good forum design you will find in free software is Vanilla.

Ok. I give up. 🙂
That's how they are. I've been trying to convince some folks to look at xenForo for a long time, and every time I do, I have the same, exhausted feeling you do. The key is to have more influence around here. (Psst. No different from TAZ.)

What @meetdilip is saying is that with SMF, don't expect the same kind of support that you'd expect from IPS, xenForo, vBulletin, etc. I agree with him that SMF is a security nightmare. Back in 2011, I was about to convert a large Astrology forum into xenForo before seeing a massive, and I do mean MASSIVE spam problem. Shortly thereafter, there was exploits - the owner, who did not have resources of a company, shut down the forum section. I was going to do the conversion for free, and without any issue because I had a license available for use. I was going to eventually acquire the forum database.

I had everything ready to go. New domain, available xenForo license, all I needed was a database. But such is life.

But when I saw that spam, and the issues, I went like... "What. the... Fuck?"

I do agree SMF does not really have a good track record but i do know they try to keep it upto date. and compared to the paid for licensed forums a lot of money / time has gone into security features, which i know from IPS and Xenforo. as its something people wanted the most as we all hate spam so they included the preventions which i have yet to see from smf though future versions for them could be better if a V3 may come out only time will tell.
