Ok, my full purchase of McAfee just expired, and I don't have any money to keep it updated. What free, and powerful antivirus software should I get?

Either AVG or Avast. I personally prefer Avast because of the bootscan feature.

I would vote either AVG or Avast also. I've used AVG for years and it's some really powerful stuff and if noob friendly.

But on the other hand Avast is just crazy-out-of-it's-mind powerful. It likes to go nuts at EVERYTHING that is slightly malicious.

That's why I'm currently using it now.
🙂

Hope I helped you out.

I suggest avg free it has done me well in the past.

I also want to suggest malware bytes as it is updated quite often and can remove those mean ones that just wont remove..

I suggest you use AVG free it has worked very well for me in the past.

It might be worth pointing out that Norton is not a free anti virus software 😉

Voted for Avast. Excellent protection; no issue ever since I installed it, and removed Norton.

It might be worth pointing out Norton isn't even classed as a anti virus in anyone that has half a brain's eyes. 😉

Same, I removed Norton because of the resources it was using, and installed AVG, and never looked back.

AVG and Avast! are both known to be extremely aggressive and are 2 of the top free anti-virus with the most false positives.

Do you have any evidence to back up that up or are you just basing that on opinion? I've never found either to be major resource hogs and I still use XP. 😛

AVG 8/8.5 is quite the resource hog. AVG 7.5 scanned MUCH faster than it. I'd like to try Avast! but I'm on Ubuntu more than Windows, usually.
