What gets members to return?

Sometimes it's a really difficult one to get right when you want to be able to entice members back to your forum as what could be an amazing incentive for one person may not be for another person and so that could only bring in a handful of members who stopped coming around.
Whenever I wanted to bring people back who hadn't visited the forum in a while I would always go for posting contests and even referall contests, many people loved coming back to be able to take part in something and be rewarded for being active on the forums and the more people that came back and were active the more the forums gained activity.
It's all about trial and error and seeing what works best for your community.

Enticing discussions, contests could help bring people back, maybe a cool new feature?
I've found newsletters sometimes bring people back. I've received some from forums I haven't visited in awhile and I went to log in to see what was new, so those could work if they aren't too annoying or done too often.

I haven't done contests nor giveaways. What entices people to return to mine is hopefully the content. I don't know of many other forums that are holistic in nature lol
