I learned that it is very easy to create a forum but it is not easy to build a community.

Anyone can make a forum with a few clicks but building a community is much harder to do.

Do you agree?

I'd agree with that assessment.

There are a ton of methods for people to get a forum up and running very quickly. If they go free remote hosted forum then they basically register their name, the board name/subdomain and then that's it. They're given the url to their site within a minute.

Even if they go with a paid webhost, once they pay and get access they can use tools like Softaculous to install a forum like MyBB or SMF in minutes.

Then whichever route they take (remote free hosted or paid host) they can slide a premade skin into place for a decent looking skin without too much work on their end. (Varies depending on the host of course...)

Then they spend time just making the sections on the forum they want and getting the permissions for those forums right.

Afterwards they can do up any documents like rules (even then there are places that offer premade rule lists with BBcode or HTML/doHTML formatting) so they can have them done in very short order.

Once they've done that their site is ready and they might only have spent a total of like 2-3 hours setting it up.

Definitely the hardest part though is advertising, attracting members and building it from just one person to a full community.

Today I learned in another forum that you should first focus on building a community first, then you can launch a forum.

That means, you can create a Facebook group first and build a fan base; after that you can launch a forum.

I would say building a forum is easy. Anyone can do it basically. Only those who are truly dedicated, work hard, and have lots of time to commit can make a successful community, many have tried and ultimately failed.

I agree with the OP. This is why I'm giving up on running forums for a while again. Too much to do offline and not enough time to do it in. Plus I've been battling health issues so that's keeping me away right now. Also, my niche has been too...narrow, I think is the word I'm looking for.

of course we agree, its kind of an Obvious fact.

what i learned as forum owner; Always , i repeat, ALWAYS
remain calm, never rage at your members, never act angry or mad
it will get you nowhere and people will only think you some sort of nuthead that cant control themselves

if something or someone makes you mad, just react in a calm but yet assertive way, let them know you are in charge.

What I learn is probably not to be greedy and always ask your community when you want to make significant changes to your members. If I hadn't moved out of Forumotion back then, perhaps we would still be going until now with active members and fun chats. It was destroyed because of technical problems when I moved it to a new host and new forum software. My members consented to it, though, but I guess they were also tired with the problems the forum got during those times.

Sounds about right. Sometimes forum communities can take years to build and lot of people don't have the patience to stay with something for so long without seeing any immediate results.

Developing a community out of your forum isn't as hard of a task as it may seem. You need to focus on posting about the niche and inspiring others with your content. Each sentence you make, each post you make and each reply you make should give something to another member - it should inspire them, give them knowledge and encourage then to also respond.

Do that and you will have a community before you know it!

The community is also the fun bit. It starts, and it never ends.
It takes and develops all your people & communication skills.
You get to know many amazing people in the process.
You have the daily satisfaction of being a part of and instrumental
in, a great and productive community.

Building a community now days is easy, even for those who are new to the webmaster world. However maintaining the forums and bringing in more traffic takes lots of work. I've learned that success doesn't happen overnight, and you can't expect your forum to grow if you don't promote it. It takes time to build and maintain a forum.
