There are so many ad blockers out there now, so if a forum member wanted, they could simply block all flash based ads and that would negate the effect of showing Adsense or other ad network ads. How do you work around that situation? As the forum would not be profitable long if you were depending on Adsense and all your ads were blocked by users.

well my site is and free so its not a problem. But I guess the beat way to work around this would be to add an and in image format, possibly an animated gif and embed it via the CSS.

I don't care. Members are the ones less likely to click ads anyway, and I use ad free as a member registration incentive to begin with.

If I were that concerned I'd stick a script there that'd just leave a note like:

Hello, we've noticed that you have adblocking software enabled. All the money earned from adsense goes into keeping this site online so we ask that you please white list our site to help preserve it. Thank you for your understanding.

- Staff of <site name>

And if it became a real problem then I'd move into more aggressive methods where if they have adblock enabled then they wouldn't get any content. (Possibly along with a message like above.)

Do you think this type of message would be a violation of Adsense TOS which forbids asking/encouraging site visitors to click on ads. Maybe it could be construed as an implied request to support the site.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. In fact, quite a lot of websites do something similar, and no one's been banned for displaying a message to those with adblock to encourage them to whitelist the site.

Indeed, I think it's quite different matter asking someone to not block your ads compared to telling them to click on ads.

(Sort of like if you were a store owner asking someone not to steal versus demanding they buy something in your store.)

Just use text based ads in signatures etc...
If you have a few posts and a decent rank then people will click the links in your signature anyway.

I don't work around that situation because I don't have ads. 😛

I wrote a pretty big article on this: http://www.webgurubb.com/threads/what-s ... kers.3720/. You deserve a cookie if you manage to read the whole thing.. 😛

Specifically regarding forums. You could remove ads for members and only anti-adblock guests. It could be an encouragement for guests to sign up "Sign up to disable ads!".

The best way to beat the ad blockers is to continue to improve your tactics at beating the blockers. If the blocker developers are improving things on their end, then its only fair to do the same on your end.

However, I don't mind if people block ads on my forums. I didn't launch them for pure profit but a little bit on my hosting and domain costs here and there is always nice. 🙂

TL;DL

But still, I feel that if a user wants to use Adblock, great. I would just kindly remind them that I don't profit from the Ads and they are used specifically for running the site they spend time on. Other than that, I'm pretty lax, so I wouldn't do anything like code them into the CSS.
