Here's a hypothetical situation. Let's say you have 500 registered members and all of them decide to start posting daily. Now that sounds like a dream come true for any forum owner. But really, are you paying for enough bandwidth to handle the load on the server? Maybe you would need to upgrade. And, that would be an ideal solution, if your forum was profitable. But what if all that traffic and member daily posting didn't equal increased earnings? Would you have enough staff to handle all the potential spam, links, complaints and trolling? For all the benefits of an active forum where all or nearly every registered member posts, there are so many obstacles to over come. So let's talk about the negative side of having a super active forum.

I'm not sure about the technical issues, but if every registered member were to be active we would definitely need a larger staff team in various timezone to be able to cover the forum as much as possible. Needless to say that there will be a raise in moderation duties, so that's one point to replace the need to worry about activity rate, lol.

Then my site would be a big board within a month or two. Tech wise I wouldn't worry too much, I'd hope my host could actually handle it.

If every member actually posted, maybe a post or two a day, this forum would probably have close to a million posts or so now.

If you mean Forum Promotion, the site would be at about 7.5 million posts a year.

We would need many...many more staff members. Upgrading would probably be ideal unless you already have enough bandwidth. I think if every member posted there would be many, many issues, chaos, etc, especially if all 22k members here on FP posted actually, or on any other forum with more members than they know what to do with. Of course it would be nice, however at the start you would have many...many issues. 😛

I'd find it hard to keep up, personally. You'd need a large number of staff to cover for the high activity. As much as I would like it, I think it would be an overwhelming experience. Every staff member hired would have to be very active to keep an eye on such a massive amount of members. It might mess things up if issues arise and are not resolved.

That'd be amazing if you're just starting out. Although out of those 500 members you'd need staff to keep up with policing all of the posting.

I've got enough space. I use a reseller so I could up the space in my sub account if I needed to 🙂

That would be really great but you'd need a ton of staff members.

22,000 active members on FP... oh my, that's scary!

Some communities benefit from being medium-sized, I think. I enjoy FP because it's relatively tight-nit. I want it to be more active, but if it was as active as DP for example, I'm not sure it would be as fun of a community to be in, you know?

I think we need some rules in any organizatons. And FP did it well. FP make me feel the tight-nit. I don't think the thing in title will happen.

I think, deep down, all forum/site owners feel this way. They dream for the day that their site takes off. Now, with the idea of, say, 500 users posting daily there would definitely be some drawbacks. But, at the same time there wouldn't be.

Example, 500 hundred users post every day and server gets slow. Need to upgrade. Sure, it costs money, but the owner would likely be able to pay for that with sponsor packages that award users cool things when they purchase it every six months.

A lot of staff would definitely be needed. In this kind of situation, it's way better to go with people you actually know (whether online or offline) that you know for certain would be able to do their job, without question.

I'm not 100% sure of the average daily active registered users here on FP, but I can see that in the last 24 hours, almost 150 registered users have logged into the forum. I know that doesn't mean they posted, but seeing all those users is enough to make most people want to join the forum.

I would absolutely love to have this problem. 🙂 I think that would be pretty incredible if all members posted regularly (non spam posts that is). Having that many active members surely some income opportunities would open up and I wouldn't mind at all passing those earning on to staff members to help keep things running smoothly.

My forum currently has ~900 members. I'd definitely need to get a couple more staff on, but I'm certain that my dedicated server could handle the increased traffic with ease.

Every member on my forum has posted at least once (I clear out accounts with zero posts). If they all posted daily? I think that would be overwhelming. *faints*

I honestly wouldn't mind if my forum one day grew that big. Yes I would have to hire tons of staff to keep up with everything, but it'd be really cool to own a huge active forum. And if everyone donated to the site, it'd help pay the server costs to keep the forum running smoothly. 🙂

More like, stressful and chaotic.

It's not like every member will be singing kumbaya down around the campfire. 😛

Trolls, scammers and malicious people thrive in heavily populated environments.

Medium sized forums are much more peaceful and you can take the time to give each member individual attention and get to know them, rather than members feeling like they're lost and drowning in a sea of people.

Haha yeah you do have a point. 😛 The trolls and scammers would get annoying pretty quickly... :\ It'd be stressful for you and your staff, having to deal with all that. :S
