To explain, I am wanting to know whether or not expecting to have at least 100 active members by the end of May 2016 would be an unreasonable expectation for a forum.

How many members would you consider to be "good" growth to a forum over 1 calendar month?

Personally, with new startups like mine, I'm happy with 1 member a month but once I get to 50 members (not there yet) I hope to have at least 2-3 a month and then just go from there.

I wouldn't base it as much on numbers, you can get a million members but if none of them is contributing anything of worth than you might as well have zero.

You mis-read what I typed. I put on a # on the active users as opposed to regular members that join but aren't active.

Sorry, my mistake.

Anyway, that's about two-years, I think it's possible. It depends on which methods you take for advertising, what your members you are able to find, and of course, how lucky you are. 🙂

Yeah. Definitely luck is a lot of it for me.

Right now, this site is my only form of advertising. :/ I don't have money to pay Adwords or much else until July 1.
Got any ideas for advertising? If so, either skype, email, or PM me. I'm a n00b when it comes to advertising.

I try Facebook, and any other social-media outlets, I also have a friend that has been having some success with Tumblr and Reddet. Also, while Forum Promotion is certainly one of the biggest advertisement forums, it isn't the only one.

Also, one way of getting members, although, it's a longer process, is through activity on another forum, you make good use of your signature, (big text, and maybe a banner) you might get a look or two thrown your way. You could also put an ad on the website and try to work up money for Adwords. Just a thought.

Depends on the forum topic. For a niche forum, anywhere from about 50 by 2016 to a few thousand by then would be good. For a more mainstream one? You might want to be a bit more ambitious/lucky...

It's about coding/design help. The Help Me Code Club Just a name I randomly came up with a few days ago.

I dont think you will get 100 active forums members by 2016.

Well, your niche, there is many competitors out there. To success, you must be 'really' and 'very' active on your forums. Also, you will 'need' to host a few contests to attract new members form another forums to yours.

You can definitely get hundreds of members in that niche then. Webmaster forums are pretty easy to get active, simply because their target audience is already heavily using the internet.

Just be warned, it's not so much activity you need to worry about, it's spam. Webmaster and promotion forums are absolutely notorious for getting filled with low quality garbage posts by members who can't speak a word of English, simply because said people tend to view them as a free source for backlinks. That's what basically killed Sitepoint, it's made Digitalpoint a terrible quality forum in general and it's what makes even part of Forum Promotion seem somewhat unusable.

Yeah, I try to avoid adwords. It goes from 0-200$ USD in 2 seconds, which is good for clicks but bad for my wallet.

I'm using the first suggestion you provided though, I'm posting on (too many lol) other forums and I am searching Twitter for keywords in tweets and replying to them...and I'm doing that sorta stuff. So far it is working okay but I still don't feel like I am getting active members that will actually stay with the "club".

Yeah, I'm noticing that. I finally have over 1,000 posts and 33 members but only 5 of those members are actually active and members that contribute at least weekly. I'm so impatient that this doesn't even seem "good" to me...I want active members like here or like milksheikh's forums that he stated above that get 40-50 new members per month. That is what I want.

I'm not worried about spam, IPB has a good filter and on top of that I have all new members posts moderated until they hit 3 approved posts. So, even if spam were to join, they couldn't post anything for new members to see.

Yeah, CM30, I'm going to make sure that people aren't joining just for the backlinks and stuff like that. I go through and view all of the categories and such and make sure there are quality posts. I don't want my site to be killed just for that. I plan to put strict measures in place when it comes to advertising and stuff like that.

I plan to run some contests as soon as I start getting paychecks from my job (end of June). That way I have some money...cause right now I am running on my savings from my last job (ended Feb 28th cause I got fired for stupid reasons). Anyway, I definitely will start some contests beginning-to-mid July.
How long do you usually have contests last? I've never figured out what is a good time frame for contests...

jacktheking OUCH! But thanks for being honest. I hope I do but I see what you are saying. There are a lot of other forums like mine out there but I hope I can differentiate myself from them.

With the attitude you have, I'm sure you can bring the club to the top!

I think a good time frame for a contest depend on what is the contest about. For example, posting contest works good if the time is long. Graphics making contest works best if it is 1 week long. Video editing contest works great if it is 3 months long.

There is not an exact number; it really depends on you and your forum! If a forum has been running for a long while, you would expect it to have more members than a newer forum, for example.

as for the number of members to join within a month, I say it would be at least 20 members, but then again, that can vary. :great:

Oh, I see. 🙂 I'll have to set one up right before school starts for me or just as school starts.
