What is considered a good number of members to have at first, say the first 2 months?

1. Advertising Here
2. Put your website below your sig so everytime you post, people can view your website under your post. =)
2. Doing a post member exchange here.
3. Get good metatags.
4. Get your own domain.
5. Have something unique about your forum (Makes it different from everybody else's) is always attractive and gets users looking more at your forums. 😉
6. Having a good looking lay out.
7. Possibly a custom skin and topic icons if you are able too.
8. Your own banner.

=) Hope I helped. ~lol~

It completely depends on a number of factors. Everything from the subject of the forum down to the forum software and if you have a paid host or not.

Ad forum will tend to get much more members in the first 2 months then a sports forum for example. A forum using phpBB would probably get more members then a forum using punbb as people will have used phpBB and are more used to how it works and feels. If you have a paid host you probably would get more members as it shows you are dedicated to your forum and there is less chance that the forum owner is going to let it die. On a free forum you have nothing to lose if you let a forum die but if you pay for hosting then you have stuff to lose.

There is a list of promotion sites stickied in advertising tips here.

150 - 200 is a little too extrame a number. I've been open for less than 4 months, and just now fixing to hit the 100 mark.

i advertise on 8 different Ad forums, and placing an Ad topic won't do you much.

you have to get involved with the communiyes of Ad forums. yoiu'll gain somwe friends and hopefully some new members.

your BIGGEST bet as new and more members. get involved with post exchanges here and other forums. they really do wonders. but, don't take on to many at one time, you'll get lost, and mixed up and upset those you're involved with.

try and do about 3-4 a day, if you're really serious. it's work, but it defenitely pays off.

Yes, but it works both ways as I had like 1,200 members after 2 months.

Just keep advertising and also, as Fowler said, it really depends what software you are using...free or paid.

Absolutely, thing is new Forum Admins think just because they create a forum they think is good, then it shouldtake off immediately.

you have to stick with it, the beginning is always your slowest point. even 6 months later, you're forum has a chance of dying after loads of super activity ... the thing is, it shows how true and dedicated you really are, if you can tough it out through the slow periods, and work and work to get it back going.

Getting you first few members is always the hardest but when you have a few it gets easier and if you have a few active members it helps alot more.

I say the number of members doesnt matter. If you provide a good community that has some active and loyal members then what more can you ask for? Ive seen forums that have less than 20 members but the forum was extremely active.
