i don't think it's a direct way to promote your website as directory sites hardly send any traffic but it's good for seo thus helps gaining traffic in an indirect way.

I personally own three directory sites that are dedicated to backlinks. If you have a forum, visit Free Forum Directory and Share Your Link and submit your site. If you don't have a forum, just a website or blog, visit Link Share Club and Share Your Link and submit your site.
