I was never in a college fraternity since the colleges I attended are small and local colleges which did not have fraternities, or even many clubs for students to socialize except for movie night where students can watch movies in a room with other students.
Plus, Fraternities don't seem to be as popular in Canada as in the USA. I think you have to know someone who has relationships to Fraternities in order to find them, or join easier in Canada.
My best guest is Frat houses are mostly used to socialize with other students, meet girls, and party based on some movies and TV shows.
Re: What is it like to be in a College Fraternity/Frat house
Not all college fraternities are the party houses you are used to seeing. Also, not all fraternities have houses. If you join a social fraternity, they are mostly frats for partying (TKE comes to mind). There are also TONS of professional and service fraternities that look good on resumes for when you graduate.

Some have open parties and such, and you can rush (a long process, easier to Google it) and if they want you in their fraternity they will give you a bid. I'm not 100% familiar with the process since I'm not in a fraternity, but a lot of the people I hang out with are in one. I might rush next semester or next year.
Re: What is it like to be in a College Fraternity/Frat house
If I plan to go back to college, or get accepted to a college with a fraternity in the future. I might join a professional and service based fraternity.
I think if you plan on working at company where the boss, and managers are alumni from the same fraternity which you are in, it can help you land an interview if you have similar skills and degrees as a candidate who is also applying for the same job since the boss or manager know more about you based on your relationship with the same fraternity as him.
Professional and service Fraternities sound like a good place to network with members for finding mentor-ships, internships, job leads, and volunteer opportunities after graduation.
