What is the benefit of submitting a website/forum/blog to directories, such as those in the pinned topic?

I'd just like to know because I submitted to as many as I could in the pinned topic, and I'd like to know what benefits will this provide...

I appologize if this question should be in the pinned topic or has been asked already.

Thanks,
Andy...

You get noticed. You get listed and people can find you. People actually go to web directories and find websites they may end up enjoying, so there is no harm in submitting your site to another website which may bring you a whole range of new visitors.

Link noise, especially useful for starting a natural link generation campaign, to perhaps mask your paid link strategy. Directories like DMOZ, Yahoo etc. are trusted by search engines and consider their listings authoritative.

In my eyes it's pointless. Why? Well do you after you submit your link every browse those websites? NO! Unless you do probably one of the only ones who does..

It's really only good for back linking =/

Backlinks. PR. Also, some directories are actively surfed by school network administrators and even home users for sites relevant to them which is more than helpful.

That's if its a crappy one. The larger and noticed ones are the ones with lesser links, but rank well, affectively helping your website. People do actually go through and look for sites, believe it or not.
