Is there an operating system that is the fastest? If so, which one is it?

I find Windows 7 64bit the fastest of all. It works great, but OS speed also depends partially on the hardware specifications. A good RAM and CPU will enhance your computer speed.

I would have to agree with RH-Calvin, I've been stuck on Windows 7 for quite some time. Loads fast and minimal. I can't see myself 'upgrading' anytime soon.

I think Puppy Linux is fastest because it uses very little RAM, CPU, and videocard resources. It also uses very little hard drive space. Debian Linux is fast as well because it also uses very little system resources like Puppy Linux.

Google's Chrome OS is pretty fast as well because it is a custom version of Linux which mainly runs the Chrome web browser.

Depends on how light the OS is and if you're using a SSD or HDD. It is best to use a SSD for a OS. I find Windows 10 quite fast with a SSD. Takes only about a few seconds to get to my login screen to Windows.

Debian when in Command Line mode is very fast as well.

I wonder which is faster MS-DOS or Linux when it is in command line mode instead of using a desktop environment like Gnome or KDE.

If we are talking about Windows then any latest version of Windows is the fastest.

If we are talking about Linux then I find Linux Mint to be pretty fast.

Google Chrome's OS is the fastest. I can even bootup in less than 5 seconds and start browsing within 10. It has limitations but gosh is it fast.

Windows XP, 7 and 8/8.1, I think are fast, from my experience. I guess it depends on your computer processor and RAM, though. 😛

I suggest you Ubuntu and expand from Linux. It was great with many apps, easy to set up and very low CPU needed.

Depends on what you want to do with it. If you wanted very high performance, then you'd probably need Windows 7, as Mac is only optimized for hardware apple sells (although the Mac Pro can be speced for very high end applications).

Linux will be faster than windows. However, if you want to run powerful software such as Photoshop, you will need Windows or Mac most likely, and if you want to run Final Cut Pro, you'll need a Mac. I know that Linux is definitely the best option for running things like complicated simulations or web servers though, as it's a system with much less going on in the background.

I think overall it's Windows 10. Why? Because every laptop I install it on becomes twice as snappy and the first time you boot you really notice a difference. Same exact hardware but somehow optimized.

Is it an upgrade or a re-install? A reinstall will always make a computer faster, as it'll wipe all the software.

Upgrade every time I have done it. I have never had to install fresh, not yet anyways.
