What kind of competitions have you ran?

I'm not sure I've really run a successful competition, unfortunately. 😛 At least not on a forum.
I haven't quite figured out how to do it yet, I don't think. People usually end up just not submitting any entires. 😛

I have run posting competitions for Amazon giftcards. I awarded them to the first, second, and third place users who made the most posts within a 25 day period. It increased activity. Some members were really competitive about it, while others not so much. I would consider running one again.
We have a monthly raffle for members to win $20, a cool permanent user badge, and their name/avatar showcased at the top right of our index for the month.
Instead of buying into the raffle, our members earn tickets around the site by making certain quality contributions. We have a list of ways they can be earned, which also includes how much each contribution is worth. It's proved to be very popular, and greatly boosted our quality of content (which was already quite high).
I got the idea when trying to figure out how to motivate certain staff members that performed services, but for cheap. I then realized that I could use this universally, for a ton of other contributions made by anyone. It can hard to come up with a measurable qualifier for such content, and to regularly keep track of all the earnings, but the latter is why I've abducted Twisted Fairytale.

We do this every month, so it's an endless battle for $20. 🙂
I've run all kinds of competitions, some more successful than others. I've done gaming tournaments, posting competitions, graphics competitions, cross-forum events, holiday-themed competitions, scavenger hunts, and probably more that I'm forgetting. 🙂
I have had a few contests or competitions on various types of forums. My graphic design forums typically have a signature of the week competition, as well as other graphic competitions. I have hosted a few posting competitions.

I have a photo scavenger hunt running and people have to take pictures off things with a sign for my site and they get a badge for their profile.
Also a photo challenge for people tip come up with fun ideas with lemons and take pictures, like dressing them up and stuff.

I agree. They look great for your numbers, but unfortunately, it's practically impossible to enforce quality. And there's usually a member or two that go crazy and spams the forum, which looks really unnatural. 😛Tucker933 said:

It's been awhile since I've done it but I once held a competition where I hid three asterisks around the forum in different posts and the first person that found all three won. What's funny is I remember my members at the time had a blast with it but I didn't actually have a prize - it was just bragging rights they were playing for. Why it was so effective though it forced my regular members to read as many posts as they could and sometimes they actually commented on what they read.
