What makes you join a forum? This may be very helpful to forum owners to look at...

  • No advertising. I don't like ads everywhere. If there are loads of ads, I usually see it as a commercial site with no community. Three text ads at the bottom are fine but ones in the header are a no no.
  • Welcoming theme. If it's too dark or just looks bad I'll usually just close the tab. Nice bright colours are good to welcome new members.
  • Activity. When all the forums most recent posts date back to last month the whole place is very unpostable and boring and that is an instant drive off.
  • Self-hosted. I no longer join freely hosted forums unless it is for some kind of benefit such as pay to register etc.
  • Not over staffing. Seeing everyone as mods and admins looks stupid. I like to be with fellow members when I join otherwise I feel isolated.
  • Not too many forums. I don't like having to scroll down forever to look at the different forums.

What about you guys?

I agree with all those points. However, I could care less if a forum is on a free host or if the person is hosting it themselves, because either way, it's a friendly community that I'm after, not exactly a self-hosted service. I also dislike it when there are ten million staff members (okay, not really ten million, but you know what I mean) and not too many active members. I too feel isolated in that retrospect, because then if there are more staff than members, it makes you feel afraid to even do anything.

What about you guys?

If a forum is on a free host it can't be very interesting as they can't write mods for it, add themes or do all of the interesting things you can on self hosted forums. It also means that they haven't put any money into their forum which shows they aren't really serious about it.

i think not much posts, registeration button cant be seen easily, long form to register,e-mail verification also affects...

I think that the hosting is irrevelant. I join a forum because of its content, activity level, and the behaviors of members, especially admins and moderators.

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!! Finally, someone who understands you can't judge a book by it's cover :great:

My forum's on the crappiest software known to mankind. And doing fairly well compared to alot of forums on paid hosts 😉

I know if i'm joining a forum the moment i lay eyes on it, and skim the index page.

I agree with these points, if the captcha is too hard aswell is a turn off for me along with very black/dark backgrounds.

I like to join light easy to navigate sites that are friendly with a good level of activity.

Hosting is just a factor, if the forum's good enough I'll use it.

I join forums to expand my knowledge, receive assistance with technical issues and also share my expertise.

It also help me to build connections with like-minded individuals. It's an excellent avenue for networking and staying updated on the latest trends

I'll join any forum, whether it's on a free host or not.

Ads are fine as long as they don't use page takeover ads. I just can't cope with those.

But I'll pretty much join any forum (as long as it's legal and moral) because we forum owners have to stick together.

I'll join a forum if the topic matter includes something that I think about a lot, or want to discuss. For example, a few months ago, I joined a Magical Girl forum, it looked pretty decent, had quite a bit of posts, unfortunately, the place went dead. Not even the admin bothered to reply to my new posts. So, that kinda killed it for me.

I also don't mind joining brand new forums, the ones with like no content on them? Because, as an admin, I know what it's like to start with nothing. It's hard to keep motivated when you're the only person posting day in and day out, and yeah, it looks like there's only one person spamming the board, but that's how content gets added, that's how conversations get started, and I love being a part of fostering that newness. Unfortunately, there are many forum admins who give up too quickly, especially in 2026. It's hard to compete with Social Media.

These days I mostly join forums where I am hired to post, or do exchanges, but sometimes I also join if I see a long term value.

For me, it’s mainly the community and activity. If a forum has friendly members, regular discussions, and topics I’m interested in, I’m much more likely to join. I also look at how organised the forum is and whether it feels welcoming to new members. An active community where people actually reply and help each other is what really makes a forum worth joining.

I started as a paid poster and I continue to join forums where I receive incentives. I also join a forum where I can promote my forum.

Meeting people with the same hobbies as me, getting answers to my questions, etc. What about you?

I join a forum if I'm interested in the niche. Also if I find it to be informative and I want to share my input on the niche too!

Distinct forums are hard to find nowadays, I join forums that have a nice theme that doesn't overcomplicate things, have engaging conversations, active. members, and active staff. I love when forums do things differently and have some form of uniqueness to them.

I mainly just join to engage about a topic (or topics) that I enjoy. I'm not really as active on forums as I used to be, so I'm only really active on one (maybe two) at a time. I usually join for the desire to discuss topics I'm interested in and stick around for the community.
