What makes you join forums? By this, I mean what features/incentives do forums need to provide for you to join?

I tend to look for a little activity, I scroll down the forum index page and expect to see replies from within the last week in nearly all the forums. If the place looks like nobody has touched it for a couple weeks, I'll just move along to the next thing.

My number 1 when deciding on joining a site is the theme. A theme tells you a lot about the owners of the site. If it is professionally developed, it looks like it took time to get everything you need, then I join. It's crucial that the site looks professional.

What sort of topics are they discussing on the forum? If it looks like something I'm interested in and it looks fun, then usually I'll join.

I agree with many of your statements including this one, if the site looks like you haven't put any work into your website just makes you look money hungry or just not into it
