I know gaming is good for it, but what about others? What niches could go light or dark? I'm confused.

Anything could potentially go well with either the light or dark design. If it is designed well enough to not have issues with navigation and displaying important items on it, you could even have most business sites run on dark themes.

Why is there such opposition to dark - or even darkish gray?

What's wrong with both? have light background with dark front or the opposite

I think my forum would do better with a dark theme because of the niche'.

I think some would do okay with a light and a dark theme, like a general forum. That way, you could please the member base regardless of which one they prefer.

Gaming forums generally do better with darker themes from the looks of things, but they can also have a light theme work well as well. More adult-oriented sites would benefit from a dark theme.

Certain niches won't have a dark theme - like child care, lol.

I seen many gaming based site that are on white LOL Why not you have two themes and they can be the same but one is white and the other is dark and let the members pick there option.

I think black hat forums, cracking and hacking forums use dark theme

why would you think an hacking site will use an dark based theme LOL

I have seen many hacking forums where they provide crack tools or hacking software use a dark theme. The first forum which appears in Google uses a dark theme.

Portfolio sites, space related sites, barbershop sites, photograph sites, streaming sites and music artist sites etc.

Considering how much "Dark Mode" is becoming popular I don't think you could go wrong with it being default so long as you have a light theme alternative. The Dark themes no matter the forum for me are much easier on my eyes and much less "in my face".

Well, two major drum lesson websites are dark. I don't really see the big turn-off for my project.

But I do think the design of my forum needs to be more suggestive that it's about "instruction" and not just drums in general.

  • Video games,
  • hack, crack torrent and warez
  • adult content
  • illegal activities content
  • dark mode enabled sites

the dark color is associated with such themes.
