Greetings! I own a moderate-sized community, almost 2000 members. The problem is, how do I get them to post? I don't want to force them to post, but I want to help promote as a standard in our community. We do have a large member base, but our forums are very underutilized. Any suggestions? Thoughts? Thank you!

What is your forum for? life discussion or other stuff? What kind of community does this forum appeal to? This could affect the number of posts I would think. Maybe you could start a posting contest. Whoever posts the most relevant and accurate post will be rewarded some sort of member upgrade or service. That will get the ball going for at least the length of the contest. Then if the posts are interesting people might still post to them for themselves. You should post regularly too. At least once if not more a day. people might not post if an admin doesn't look to be actively moderating the website, even if the moderators are.

I hope this helps and I apologize if it doesn't. Just an idea.

Look at your forum. Why would you post on your forum? Would you use it if you were a member? You need to give them a reason to use your forum. Start up new threads, build discussions, continue using and taking advantage of social media to link to threads and whatnot. Be sure to link to your forum on your servers and other property.

But a forum is fundamentally built on discussion. Without this, your forum will remain as is. If you have a number of staff available, get them involved in the thread creation process. Get them to reply to your newly created topics and build from there.

I couldn't agree more. Get your staff members to be active and also spark up some new topics. I also suggest sending mass E-mails to your current members with new contest/news to give them a reason to come back and to participate. :]

This.

While your forum has a nice little user base, you need to create threads on a regular basis just to keep discussions going. You should also consider replying to some threads that may have been buried.

Creating good quality topics is the solution to this and then posting replies and having conversations in the topics is key. If you start discussing and having conversations this will make it easier for members to post.

There are 2 things: First, you have to have content for them to post in. Members will not just "show up" and post. If the only content is posted by staff, it will not look as good as a bunch of different people posting.

2nd: You have to give them a reason to post. Why should I post at your forum? I would recommend post exchanges to help solve both of those problems.
