So for the search query "Sinful Forums" I am ranked as the top but for other search queries (stuff that people are more likely to search for) such as "shiny starter qr codes" my thread on my site about it is on the second page so less people will look considering that the other sites have similar information. That being said what do you do to rank threads for normal search queries higher?

This is about customers' behavior in keyword selection. When you do keyword research, you must pay much attention about this issue.
You should study much about your product, your customer, your goal. For example, if you want to get more traffice, you should not do something too unique. Try imagining that: You run a restaurant, PR online, trying to raise customer number - so among many dishes you should choose Pizza than an amazing special-irgredient-using spicy Bantimore food.
But, if that special food is the main food of your restaurant, you have no other way to choose it as PR keyword and accept the small volume of this unique market.
So, it denpends on lot factors and you have to research and select them carefully.

On the other hand, you don't want to go too broad and not have any keywords that your site can control. This was a huge problem with my old general discussion forum because it had such fierce competition that it couldn't get anywhere in the SEO space.

To answer your question, to get higher in the ranks you're going to need more quality backlinks. Your best bet is to make useful, unique content that everyone wants to share. I doubt you'll get anywhere with your Pokémon QR code example because you're competing with behemoths like Bulbapedia but if you can find your niche that is unique - but not so unique that nobody is searching for it - then you've got your sweet spot.
