Okay, so I was out today, driving with mum to her dentist appointment and we pull in the drive way. This eleven year old kid (he was so little), was not only wearing a skater hat, and his collar high up. But he was smoking. What made it worse, was what looked like his MOTHER, was standing right next to him.

Now, I don't know about you but this is just sick.

What is society coming to?

11 year old smoking? WTF. What are the laws in Australia for smoking? What age do you have to be to smoke there?

The mom didn't care?

Ugh. Some parents really need to start policing what their kids do. When I was younger I knew some 11 year olds who smoked, but their parents would have killed them.

You have to be 16 to smoke. And show proof of ID. So the mother would've bought them for him.

He could have gotten someone else to buy them for him, although if he was doing it in front of his mom that's unlikely.

There was a study that showed that there are 3rd graders out there that smoke already. It's really, terrible. Shame what society is coming to.

The legal age to purchase smokes here in Australia is 18 and only with proof of age. Yes what you have posted re the 11 yr old is Disgusting.. the mother needs to be slapped senseless, but one would have to see it through her eyes and reasoning that if he is going to smoke then it best be done with her consent and in her presents.

It is a real shame though what society is coming to.

11? It's understandable these days... People are getting pregenant at a very young age... This type of thing needs to STOP!

Kids will be kids. We cannot control what one person will do or think. We cant stop it. We just try to teach them better and hope for the best. Sorry for bursting your bubble, but that is the truth.

It isn't fair at all that I was born with asthma. Some people smoke and still can breathe better than I can.

I do agree with what Justin said, though. You can't control what kids do; you can only educate them and hope that they will make the right decision.

I would say something about liberals and how they need to "express themselves", but I won't.........Whoops.

That was the best post I've seen here in a while. Kids are growing up too fast. I know a girl that was preggers at age 12. Some scary shit. I never saw her in school since I found out about that.

Kids (which some would say would include me), keep your shit in you pants. You know how bad it looks to be in a serious relationship and have to tell a girl that you screwed another girl and got her pregnant?

I know a 12 year old who smokes a pack a day. A friend of mine smoked pot and cigs in middle school and drank in 8th grade.

Yes, it is not socially acceptable, and it is bad, but when it comes to laws the 11 year old kid you saw would be in just as much trouble as I would.
I am 16 years old and smoke a pack a day. I have had troubles with drugs and alcohol, but I am sober now.
The point is that that 11 year old boy is breaking society's rules and the government's laws just as much as I am and have done in the past.

What you saw is normal in many places. Not normal as in it is acceptable, but seeing an 11 year old smoke for me is not a huge surprise.
Does it still make me want to throw out his cig? Yes it does. I often tell them to at least wait til highschool, but it is not something I would be surprised to see.
