You should keep the theme simple related to forums. This is attract more members. The content should be easily readable and should be in plain text for better viewing. Keep it as simple as possible to make visitors register and stay on your forum for discussions.

You should change forum to a PunBB version,because it gives you more features,and it can be alot nicer designed then other themes.
There are some cool themes you can find on forumotion forum , and also on hitskin.
