What types of things will cause errors for members on a forum? I'm thinking maybe add on conflicts? What other types of things? I don't know the exact errors because I'm not on the forum I have in mind, I just know that there have been complaints. So I'm wondering what will cause errors...maybe some of you could tell me about your past experiences?
Theme errors can pop up sometimes. If people are using outdated browsers they will also run into problems accessing your websites if you use a SSL certificate which pretty much most websites do these days for extra security. But that's more on the user's end than your website.
I always used to have issues with themes and add ons. I would just copy and paste codes that others would create into the appropriate fields on Invisionfree, but sometimes, different things would clash or I'd just put something in the wrong field, and it'd all get messed up. Back then, a lot of people had test boards to try things on and make sure it all worked before releasing it to the public, that way if something got broken, it wouldn't mess up the forum for everyone.
I actually still have a test board! It's on Jcink now though, and I mainly used it for RP stuff to make sure the codes I made for templates didn't break the site before sharing them with other people (especially since my coding skills are very strong beginner), but it didn't really bother me if things were broken on my test board, as long as it was still usable for me.
Theme and addon errors are definitely some of the bigger ones.
What I see a lot is when forum theme/addons are updated and are not compatible with the existing theme version or forum version. Or the other way around when the theme or forum is updated and the addons aren't compatible.
I usually wait to upgrade the forum (unless it's a security issue) until my theme and addons get an update associated with the new forum update.
With that being said, I try to keep addons to a minimum, as in 5 or less in all honesty.
The more addons and themes you provide on your forum, the more likely you'll run into issues and errors and of course extra security concerns.
