If you're wanting to start a forum and need help promoting it then here is a list of what to do and what not to do when promoting your forum. Keep focus as some of these might help your forum in the long-run. There are 4 tips for What To Do and 4 tips for What Not To Do.

What To Do
  1. Promoting your forum on social media is a great way to gain attraction. Large sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Blogger are the perfect ways to gain a small amount of users. Other forums that allow promoting of websites can be a great way to gain users but using either forums or social media will only bring a small amount.
  2. If you're still in school and have started a forum then well done. Because 1. You're still in school and 2. You'll have something else to do after finishing homework. So if you do start a forum while in school then tell your classmates about it. Try asking your friends to join and if they yes then think if you want to make them an administrator or keep them as a regular user.
  3. If you're in a club then tell some club members about it. This might interest them into joining your forum but a lot of clubs aren't very huge so depending on the club you go to, the number of people joining may vary.
  4. Try optimizing your site to get the best spot in the SEO(Search Engine Optimization). Doing this will get you to the top sites quicker if someone searches something related to your forum. Something like Google's webmaster tools is a great way to do this.
Now that we've covered about what you can do to get your forum out there, let's go onto what you shouldn't do.

What Not To Do
  1. Don't spam posts, texts, blogs or photos begging people to join. This might turn people off. Just send out posts from time to time and then the users will start rolling in.
  2. If you're still in school, don't constantly bother classmates about it. Even your friends. Doing this, classmates will get annoyed of you and could possibly start teasing you or bullying you. So if your classmates say no, then accept it and find others.
  3. Don't buy ads as soon as you start-up your forum. If a few days have past and nobody visits then ads could play an essential role. If you want a lot of users then you're going to have to bet a large sum of money in advertising just to get your forum out there.
  4. Don't abuse search engine results. If people keep finding ads, posts and links to your site all over the web then you'll look like a beggar just asking to get teased and bullied. If people keep finding the site then they might sign up and start flooding the site with hate posts, explicit images and other trash which will be hard to moderate and possibly destroy your site.
So hopefully these tips can make you a lot better at promoting your forum. May your forum be big and strong.

The dos and don'ts are interesting and useful. I have tried launching a forum in the past, however, I gave up because I had difficulty customizing the forum (I do not have programing skills), difficulty in getting members and difficulty in having regular discussions. However, I am still interested in launching a forum in future These tips will surely help.

Always remember what Robert The Bruce said.”If you don’t succeed, try and try again.” I have started multiple forums to and they failed. My most recent one is deemed successful to me.

But please remember that those tips are for promoting your forum, not for managing it. But if it helps then I’m glad. Good luck.

I would get them in an email list or Facebook group. Basically, you want a closed "list" situation where you can reach them over and over. You would, of course, send in posts about your MyBB, XenForo forum etc..

Anyway, though, I've known about this since probably the 2000s - I am only starting to get into this stuff.

Don't spam posts, texts, blogs or photos begging people to join.
And I know at least two people that are guilty of this :bored: Basically, if anybody does such a thing, then they're a terrible admin to begin with.

My method right now is to build up my Twitter account and get followers and traffic to the site from there. Then, in the mean time I am going to slowly take on a few post exchanges that make sense with someone that has a knowledge of the niche I am working with. I am also running a contest to try and work together some replies and new content.

I know I posted these tips but I haven't though about an email list. How would I go around doing an email list in the first place?

Yeah. People who get too desperate overtime should just give the forum to someone more worthy or close it down.

Lol yes. This happened to me back in the early years of secondary school. 😛
But yeah, a lot of forums started by school friends usually turn into hellholes pretty quickly because kids are usually derps
