What should admins offer members who are active to keep them that way?

Activity, forums are based around a ground of discussion. Simply by keeping activity up is the best, baseline way on rewarding your loyal members. You could offer them a sort of l337 membership that provides them with more features than regular members, along with providing them with their own forum?

Usually a post count-based system works well. Like have the lower ranks closer together to get them started, then space them out.

When a member has reached a certain amount of posts on my forum, they are automatically put into a new group where they received many additional perks and yes a private forum too.

Perks are:

Private Area
Chat Addict Group colour
PM Attachments
5 second flood control
Up to 10 emails daily - 5
Mass pm 5 members at once
Up to 300 pm storage space
Can edit own topic title & description
Instant Arcade play

I was going to add larger avatars but still not decided with that yet.

Depending what your forum is about there could be many more possibilities that you could give them..

If it's game specific, you could give these members the inside latest news/hints for that particular game before it going out to the other members.

If you were thinking of implementing some changes to the forum, you could discuss it with these members first to get some feedback before going live with it.
