What types of forums do you think people are most likely to join? What kind of forum makes you most excited, if it's a nicely designed forum with relevant content?

This is more for academic interest than planning to make a forum. I'm curious more than anything.

Yes, but my question is what areas interest you?

Usually admin forums are successful as they provide a platform to promote their site and discuss with other admins. People who know how to use forums are more likely to join more, and so forums about forums have higher chances of success

There is no outstanding forum type. if it is a good forum, ill join.

According to Big-Boards, forums which are big tend to be general discussion and roleplaying.

However, it would be silly to go by your reasoning. People don't just join because of the niche. If the forum is large, people will most likely have the urge to join. It exponentially grows and becomes a big forum.

Also, if you choose to go with general discussion, or whatever is suggested, people won't just join. They will stay on the big forums and don't care one bit about yours. It's best to just go with a familiar niche and work around it rather than assuming a forum with a lot of members means you will get a lot of members. With that notion of thought, you will never succeed.

that is utterly irrelevant. My point is that people are interested in joining forums that interest them, but only big ones, really. There is nothing that gets the "most" attention, you just have to advertise in ways which will draw audiences outside of the communities like this one to tap the nearly infinite amounts of people who may be interested.

@DotDavid, those are forums which tend to have a lot of spammy posts. I wish people counted forum worth by net post word counts. 😛

@Austin01: wrong.

forums that offer a bit of everything to people.
Not true. Many people won't join forums which give them a bit of what they want. they want A LOT of what they want.

I agree.

However, I have joined boards that have a subject that I no nothing about.... like a aviation parts forum. If it looked nice with decent amount of activity - I would post there.

I don't care the genre as long as it has interesting content to read and that I could contribute to. Even if I can't contribute to it, I'll probably register to say thanks for the good and interesting content.

Then, you, sir, are in a very, very, very, very small minority.

Honestly, a warm, friendly forum. If I join it's a forum it's because I feel comfortable. The forum will give me a good vibe, nice members who welcome new people and allow them into their community and some topics I feel like I can contribute too. Cosmetics of a forum play a part. I get scared off from huge forums (I mean like oodles and oodles of forums and subforums). I don't want things blinking at me and distracting me as far as a style. Mods are nice but I've seen some people do what I think is overkill. Give me a simple, clean styled forum with some nice members and good topics any day and I'll join. :]

A forum that sparks my attention and has good quality theme and posts and a sexy admin like Fowler over there.
