If you found yourself on a forum using a pirated software but had an owner who claimed was going to buy a legit copy once they received enough donations to afford it, would you still report it anyway so it would get shut down or leave it be?

The right thing to do would be report it.

Agreed. I would report it as well. No matter what they are using a pirated software, and that is against the law. I don't care how many times you hear, "oh, well, I'll purchase an actual license once I can afford it", it doesn't make any difference because he is still breaking the law no matter how he looks at it. Maybe you'll get something out of reporting it, maybe you won't. Especially if the owner in question is using Vbulletin, because I do remember someone saying they've been quite careless in this department.. kind of pathetic, actually. If I were to have worked for Vbulletin, and someone reported a person for using a nulled script, then heck yes I would want to take action, or at least look into it if nothing else (I'm pretty sure most software companies, at least the decent ones, look and see that a person filing the complaint is telling the truth or not). So I agree that it should be reported. You can't let something like this alone, as he is breaking the law. That sort of thing would be like somebody robbing a jewelry store and the employees not doing anything about it for some reason or other. Not sure how this would work as far as contacting the police though. While yes he is breaking the law, it's hard to say for sure whether the police would be interested in a case like this, but who knows?

leave it and give the owner of the forum a chance.

With there being a plethora of free forum software available, in this situation I would say report it.

I always use free software until I can afford a license. I think that using pirated software is pathetic, and anyone who uses it should be blacklisted from using the software period. If your "going" to buy it, stick with a free software until you can get it, that's my opinion. At one point (I DID NOT KNOW), the owner of CH (Caliber Hosting - I'm CEO), was using IP.Board, and I was stupid enough not to check it. Once I was notified it was pirated, I got rid of it, and started fresh with MyBB.

No, the developers work hard on the software's. Your idea is what a five year old would suggest. Would you want your work ripped by someone who uses it for free even though they put lots and lots of work behind the software?

I was thinking along the same lines, actually. I'm sure loads more work go into paid software like IPB and Vbulletin compared to any open-source software. Definitely would not be a wise idea to sit back and wait for someone to do something to him or his forum, that's for darn sure.

I agree that people shouldn't use pirated software regardless if their insistence on paying for it once donations come. I tried telling that to one person in their ad topic on a forum they were a member(not staff) of and it vanished because no criticism is allowed apparently. Oh well, I look forward to reality and this person meeting up someday. I imagine it will happen sooner rather then later and they will have no one to blame but themselves for it. You can only stick your head into the sand for so long.

I would report it. Why run a pirated forum with all the free forum software out there? The paid forum providers are paid for for a reason and pirating it is what could stop them making further advances with it.

How about if you don't report it you can give me the link and I will submit a report. 😉

Why should I have to bust my balls earning to buy forum licenses for freeloaders to just go to scriptmafia and get a free copy? Bah humbug, They would get reported.
