My biggest disappointment was seeing good, long time friends leave my forum. And, I guess this is something that happens to others, life just takes them away. I just assumed we would always share a common place online to talk and socialize. Not having many ways to contact these people other than my forum, we lost contact.

for me, it was closing my forum before I even gave it a chance. It was doing OK, but I guess I expected too much for a new community. They can be hard to take off, and I felt that wasn't the case. As a forum owner, you need to put in the effort and not give up in any situation. You also have to be patient (which I wasn't).

My biggest disappointment would definitely have to be starting a community that started off so well then just rapidly declined and died. It's really disappointing!

It can be hard to show patience for a new forum community. And, it helps to have strong ties with other related forum communities which might provide a steady stream of new members. Or, in some way to have access to friends who want to post on your forum anyway.

My biggest disappointment would be of myself when I made the mistake of thinking that my forum would remain busy without me. I left it to my staff members to carry on the conversations. A couple of months later activity died down drastically. As an administrator it's our duty to be able to dedicate our time and post regularly and consistently.

My biggest disappointment when I still had my forum running was to decide to get out of the comfort zone of being in Forumotion. Talking to others who had seen success after getting independent, I thought the same would work on me. And the community agreed on it. But there were too many troubles and eventually I wasn't able to sort them out. The community fell apart. Lesson learned, and I hope for everyone else too, that technical things are not everything. Regardless of what people say, consider the options very carefully.

The hardest thing for me is getting the forum up and going. You have to put in the time to put the forum together, advertise the forum, make sure there are plenty of discussions going on to keep members interested, etc. There is a lot that goes on around a forum and not everyone realizes that.
My point is, make sure you have the time to commit to making a forum work before you decide to make a forum in the first place. It's not as easy as some people might think.

The most disappointing thing for me was having all my content purged and not having an up-to-date backup. I know the latter is my fault for being slack but it still really hurt.

Yeah, I had that happened to me too! It was such a silly mistake. However I was still not used to take back-ups after the incident as I never actually built any forum after that, but it's a good lesson to other webmasters out there.

Sometimes the beginning can be a lonely phase. I'm so excited about my project, but some people I would expect to see it, do not. Then you just have to look in the mirror, encourage yourself, and crack at it & keep going. You have to be the engine at the start and that engine has to be fed with energy & positive thought.
