What's easier, reviving a long dead forum or starting a new one?

I’ve been thinking about something and wanted to get your take on it. If you had to choose, do you think it’s easier to bring a dead forum back to life or to create a brand new one from scratch?

A few thoughts:

1. Getting People Involved: Do you think it's simpler to get people interested in a forum that used to be active, or is it better to build a community from the ground up with new members?
2. SEO and Visibility: Starting fresh has no advantage for SEO. There isn't any. But it makes it easier to start doing SEO the right way. How do you think each option affects your site's visibility on search engines?
3. Content Issues: What about managing content? Is it helpful to have a bunch of old posts and threads, or can that sometimes be more of a headache than a help?
4. Technical Aspect: Are there tech-related pros and cons to each option? Like, dealing with outdated software and broken links in an old forum versus setting up everything new with the latest tools.

I don't have the answer, but as a member, I'd rather return to a forum that's revived than to try to help post on a brand new one.

I would try to salvage an existing community.

Do some research on past content and members. Try to see if you can summon and target previous active members. Focus on getting them active again and building a loyal relationship between you and them.

Set the voice and theme of the community to align with your goals. You can do this by sticking to a voice that helps that, choosing a familiar posting styles, and dicatating future content published on the community.

Look for times when the community thrived the most and set a goal to get back to that era.

That's what I would do at least.

I just reopened a old forum I had from 2016. I need to remember my login details for my Twitter account for the forum because when I sent out a mass email, no one seemed to come back to the forum unfortunately... Either way I feel like reopening a well established forum would be better than starting one from scratch.

I would say it's much easier to revive a long dead one. You've already got the building blocks. You've got a head start on the marketing side, as you'll already have a list of emails that you can promote to and such. There's also that feeling of nostalgia that gets returning users back involved. That's usually fleeting, but it can really help get the ball rolling.

I have never taken over another old Forum from someone and ended up starting from nothing myself. However even that bayside is still running it's almost dead if not dead and so I started to have that people myself now that I have to bring it up again...

Reviving a dead forum if it's similar to the forum you want. All the content from the old forum can help speed up the growth, and you can send out emails to old members.
