How did you develop the name of your website, blog, or community?

Do you generally find naming things difficult these days? Especially when you have to find a good domain name that corresponds with your chosen name.

So, what was your strategy for naming your website or community? How did you remain unique?

For me, Discuss Communities was a little difficult to find. I wanted to outline exactly what the community would be about. And finally I said to myself "I just want a good domain name and name that shows where you can discuss online communities" and then the lightbulb turned on 🙂

I've recently started an off topic community. The name idea came to me quick "Off Topic Section" because that is what many of us have traditionally called our off topic boards.

I found naming my forums quite easy. I wanted to start a forum where members could discuss all types of animals so I named it Critters.

My general discussion forum I named Gabfest (meaning: a conference or other gathering with prolonged talking).

When I was trying to find names for Crafter Craze, I did a lot of checking on Go Daddy. I also wanted to make sure that the name I chose wasn't similar to an existing crafting forum. I'm happy with the name and don't want to give up the domain name yet.

It takes me a little bit to come up with names for my sites. I usually will think of a name, check if the domain name is available, and if it isn't then I'll come up with another name. For my Sonic blog, "BlueHedgehog" fits well since Sonic is a blue hedgehog. 😛 TheeZone was chosen because simply "thezone" was already taken. So I just added another e at the end, though the word "Thee" means "you".

I started using the name Chat Addicts back in 2009 after a lot of thought about what I would call my forum before I first started it. I figured with it being a general chat forum and it also being for those who love to post around forums, having the words Chat and Addicts would make sense and that is how Chat Addicts got its name 🙂

Earlier this year I did reopen Chat Addicts but after thinking, moved to a Promotion Forum and it made sense to keep the Addicts and just change Chat. Due to lack of staff and also taking a look at things, I ended up moving back to a general chat forum and Chat Addicts was used again 🙂

Someone has been sitting on a domain I wanted for decades. You can tell it's decades because the domain resolves to a page that was written for 640x480 resolution and says it's best viewed in Netscape 2.

I don't really worry too much about domain names anymore because once people have Googled and bookmarked my site the domain is of little significance. That said I did register an interest in a couple of .music domains around 10 years ago but I'll probably be pushing up daisies before they get released.
