Would I see a bigger performance boost having 8-16GB of RAM, or a SSD Solid State drive on a new computer or laptop?

RAM seems to be slightly cheaper then a SSD drive which can cost hundreds of dollars for a decent size one like a 250GB SSD.

I seen some videos on YouTube of people launching lots of programs at once in seconds with a SSD, but I don't know how well those programs perform once they are all launch since they probably use a lot of RAM and CPU Cycles.

It depends. If you can dish out for 8GB and a SSD, you're golden. If you're gaming or editing videos, you need RAM more than SSD. Think of SSD are more of an optional upgrade, albeit a useful one.

As stated above it depends. 8GB is the minimum you're going to want to go for these days. SSD's are more of a luxury purchase, but there is always a point where you won't need more RAM (for the next 5 years anyway), and the price for an SSD is almost worth it for the performance if you have the money to spare.
I'm personally running an M4 SSD and I don't regret it.

8GB is complete overkill for the average PC user. A large majority of users still only use the PC for web browsing and word processing. Unless your a gamer or multimedia editor, 8GB is unnecessary.

If I could have 8GB and a traditional HD or 4GB and SSD, I'll take the SSD. I do agree that if you can have 8GB and an SSD, which you can find cheap as I picked up a SSD for $75 shipped on 1saleaday last week, do it.

I think if you use mainly for gaming 8Gb ram with a 250gb SDD would be nice , but that's just my opinion

you can even get away with 4 gbs of ram for gaming,
also check that your laptop motherboard can support upto 8 or 16 gbs of ram.

i personally would choose the SSD, but only if you have minimum 4gb of ram,
also choose a good speed of RAM if you do go with it, such as 1333 or 1600
