What's the best way to gain members from social media?

Who here has gotten a good amount of members from social media? What did you really do to get the members to your page and onto your forum? It's obvious that you shouldn't just spam your link out there, but you should post useful stuff regularly. What's your best ways to gain members from social media?

Social media is a really tricky one. You have to find a target audience that actually are interested in a forum, not only liking cat videos on Facebook or Twitter. I have found that using established social media pages to get your link out is much more beneficial that actually trying to build your own page from scratch. For example, do some work for a site that has a big social media following and ask them to post your link in return. Doing something for them is much more time effective than the time it takes to build a social media page.

Social media promotion is beneficial only when you know the trick to attract more visitors to your fan page. Taking part in active discussions and happenings around will help to get you more members.

Twitter allows you to like so many channels before you're locked from adding more people until you have a following of your own close to that number.

Follow accounts who follow twitter profiles related to your niche, unfollow those who don't follow back. Repeat.

Stay active in posting new content, use automated messages for DM's and tweets to new followers that are not spam, but relevant to help the person use your site for something useful.

I think a good way to find users that are interested in your niche is to look through the followers of people in your niche who sell sponsored tweets. If you look on BuySellAds, for example, you can find popular accounts who sell tweets. They might even be part of an advertising bundle, which would give you a solid list of accounts to follow and advertise to. 🙂
