Facebook and Twitter are also NoFollow backlinks. But that's not the point. The point is that any time you have a link out there, somebody will likely click on it.
If you post relevant comments, then you are going to get people checking out your website. This may not drive a lot of traffic, but you need to have a good spread around the internet to pull traffic from a multitude of sources.
Aside from that, a nofollow backlink is still better than no backlink at all.

Now seriously; in the best case scenario nothing happens by doing that. In the worst case scenario you end up fucking your backlink profile.
I can't believe someone actually says that's a viable method these days...

A lot of people in this thread are saying Social Media promotion, but what Social Media sites do you leverage besides Twitter?
Social media is an effective way to get traffic to your website. Facebook is my favorite social networking site to promote the websites ans helps to increase the site's visibility in search engine result page. Social media helps to build more quality back links to your site.

I like backlinks but think I have been booted from one site so really terrific esp as I only did nearly a 1000 posts on their site.
just set up one of my forum rooms for blogs, how does google+ work, I have that on my forum but not sure how to use it.

I created a Google+ account a long time ago not knowing what it was. It works fairly easily. When I post a new blog post I have the option to post it via Google+ as well (With blogger, that is) It's seem by major search engines especially Google considering they're the creators. Basically I get instant traffic from each blog post.

I have tried all sorts to get traffic but nothing is converting in to forum members.
had a bad start when I set up my new forum and when I got them sorted had trouble getting it listed with the big gun google so as a last resort I have opted for a forum domain.
I do find even years ago that those on very large forums along with those on the big social giants are a very hard nosed and can't see anything outside the world of their media giants. if I tweeted or submitted to fb you would see visitors appear then moments later all gone back to their enclosed worlds of the giants.
any way all I can do now is hope for the best, going to give it six months for the forum to pick up then move on to something else.
got loads of graphic art so may look to some kind of site to host them.
