My dad got that from being in the army. I forget what the reason was.

I believe you can get it or a form of it from an ear infection but the most likely cause is exposure to continual loud noise. In my case it's due to decades spent standing in front of 200+ watts of amplification without any ear protection.

Wow! Was this because of your job? Surely they had some level of obligation to give you PPE if it was?

In a way. I'm a professional musician and back in the day we had to use a few hundred watts worth of amplification to fill a hall. Today most musicians use less powerful equipment which is fed through a public address system that sits in front of the musician.

Wow it sucks that your job has had such a big impact on your health/hearing!

I don't think I really can associate with a noise, maybe a laugh since I tend to laugh a lot if I had to pick.

Some people grunt. There was a guy on the train I used to take to work who grunted all the time. No one wanted to sit near him LOL
