There is an array of opinions as to when a person fully matures. Should the legal age of adulthood be lowered or raised? At what age do you think you are an adult?

I personally think that for the average person, age 21 in the U.S. is a good starting point. Some can act as adults at the age of 18, but I don't think that many are ready to act like adults until they have been out in the world away from partying all the time with friends, and involved with working to earn ones passage.

I thought I was an adult at the age of 16. Now that I'm in my 50s I see I didn't stop being a bratty kid until I was 30. If being an adult means you take on your own responsibilities then 21 is a good age. If being adult means you are ready mature mentally then it could mean any age LOL

I've seen some people go out in the world and can be an adult at 18 years old. However, I've seen some people who are way older than that who act like a spoiled, bratty kid well into their 20's and some even into their 30's. I don't think you can pinpoint acting like an adult to one specific age. I think it will definitely vary from one person to the next. Some people just grow up faster than others.

He he, when you have a kid. That's when you stop being a kid yourself (or at least need to care for someone who is clearly helpless). I used to feel like an older kid till I was 35 and had a baby. That's when I finally transitioned towards acting like a full grown up 😀

I don't think I was really an adult until I returned from Asia. Something about being in this area kept me a child. I mean, after being away so long - I could not connect to locals.

You become an adult when you spend more waking time at the grocery store than you do in your house.

You're an adult when you realize $200 is not really a lot of money, and other kids judge you when you buy toaster strudel at the store...

Personally I do not think there is a specific age. Sure if you are going to generalize things then people may become more mature as they age, but isn't that presumptuous and also unfair on mature eighteen-year-olds?

That being said, in the UK I have witnessed many immature people at this age, which makes me favour an older legal age such as 21.

I think it depends on the maturity level of the individual. I've seen a mature 15 year old kid then a 60 year old who needs to get his life together already!

I'd just say turning eighteen years old officially makes you an adult, even though age is just a number in terms of acting like an adult. I've worked with teenagers that are much more mature than middle aged adults. Just varies.

It depends on the culture & the expectations of said culture.

There are many "obscure" cultures in pockets of the earth who play by different rules. Freedom to chose isn't as wide an option as it is in the "western" culture

There's no easy answer to this question because people mature at different rates. In years I would say people become an adult around the age of 18 but mentally and emotionally there is a huge difference in the rate people become an adult.

My granddaughter's mother went to prison when she was 20 and was given a test. They said she had the mental age of a 13 year old so although she was an adult in the general sense of the word it was just a child having a baby. She has never been able to look after her daughter.

Legally 18. A lot of people are immature and blow their money on crap. I don't think you're grown up until you go out and take on a career and pay what needs to be paid such as rent, your car payment, insurance, food, and your utilities. Stay away from illegal narcotics and breaking the law. Then I believe you're a responsible adult.

You become an adult when you can do things by yourself comfortably without needing the help or supervision of an older person, I think you are matured by then. 18 years is good enough for someone to be matured in all his dealings.

It's really hard to say, because even really young kids do a fair job at acting as mature as an adult.
