Do you wait till you completely finish development and have a plethora of content on it? When do you feel is the right time to submit your site to search engines?

No point submitting your site/forum to search engines if it's half or barely complete. That's just silly.

(also, I've never bothered submitting mine to search engines, should I admit)

Never submitted. Instead I managed to get the search engine bots on their own on my forum. I just promoted my forum in other forums. And that worked out to bring google traffic.

wait till most is complete then submit away to heaven and then let the show begin in three or if not never as it's slow and deeply passionately.

That's usually what I tend to do. It seems to take more time than necessary though so maybe submitting will speed up the process.

I submit as soon as I possibly can. You want your content to be crawled as soon as possible.

How much content do you prefer to have up before submitting though?

It doesn't matter. Think of it this way: You finished your homework, you go out and play, the mailman drops off mail or picks up your mail without you even knowing he was there. The same logic applies here with search engines. They come to your site and crawls it without you knowing they were there. Often times, they just crawl weeks after you post your content.

When you submit your content, the bot comes in a few days after you submit it. That's why it's important to have sitemaps/RSS/whatever ready at the same time you start posting new content. Because it's doing the work in the background, while you're posting the content. That is, assuming this site is a wordpress site, or xenForo, or IPS, or similar software that prioritizes SEO as part of the software package.

I've just submitted my new forum(SocialME) to Google using the webmaster tools. I had a spider sent by Google to crawl all over my site about 15 minutes ago.
