It's not unusual find a few discussions posted in the wrong subforum. However, some forum members perpetually create posts in the wrong subforum as if they can't be bothered to find the right place for the post. And, though a moderator can just as easily move a misplaced discussion, most have other jobs on the forum they need to be doing, such as community interaction and spam patrol. What will you do when a specific forum member keeps posting discussions to the wrong forum?
If a member was to continuously post in the wrong location through sheer ignorance or laziness, I'd likely give them a warning for it if they were continuing after being told where they should be posting. It's just a lack of courtesy and common etiquette.
If they do it a couple of times I'll shoot them a message and let them know they need to post in the correct boards but if it continues I'll definitely take action.
I changed what I do as this seems to be an issue that is coming up now in my forum (didn't used to).
I am just handing out warnings. As I now have a global announcement stating what each forum section should have as far as posts and topics in it so it isn't that hard to read it.
I've already had to give out 1 warning & that was after I posted the announcement.
I would message them if the problem continues before doing anything else. Of course I would move the posts myself if my other staff members were busy, but if the problem kept persisting I would give them a tiny warning after the friendly message.
When you have around 500 forums on your board, that tends to happen quite a bit. We move posts into the correct category and forum all the time with no fuss, but then again, it's a classifieds site, so... we classify! 🙂
