At what lifecycle is is time to get a full custom theme for your forum, blog, or website in general?

How often should a site owner get a new custom theme?

How long is a piece of string 🙂

I'm a firm believer in brand identity even when a forum is just a few hundred posts old. That can be achieved with a professionally designed logo and the default theme, a custom theme being the icing on the cake.

A makeover which might include the logo is really only necessary when the current appearance starts to look dated. At the moment the Net is quite flat in appearance but when that becomes dated it should prompt a change.

I'm a member at a really big women's forum and their theme hasn't changed in years and seriously, for what the women use the forum for (health information and support), themes aren't what they're interested in. If you have members coming to your site for specific information, as long as it's easy to navigate, changing the colors or look of isn't really important to them.

Not all forums can be like that though because perhaps gaming ones need to really catch the eyes of members and keep them entertained because entertainment is the interest of the members.

I agree, many of the largest, most active forums in the world run on the platform's default theme.

Can't day ow many sites that I join over the years. Many long years in fact. I can say that one of the IPB forums that has been running for the last 12 years only had two themes changes in its time. If the theme works and goes with what the site is about and it's iconic, why change it. Just think that IPB themselves have not made changes much other than their main theme has had updates and improvements over the years of running.

I see many that have so many theme changes that you think why, to others that they have not changed once but maybe it's good or bad. Me, I had around three main theme changes and also had and always had a second theme option for members to pick what theme that they want to use 🙂 What I have now is what I been using for over two years and that's what I'm going to stick with now.

I think that depends on what the owner of said website, forum, blog wants to do. They may feel a certain "theme" isn't working for their site and want to change it right away. Other times, they may keep it for a couple of years before changing it to spice things up.

When it comes to a theme for a forum, I believe that it falls on the owner of the forum and how much they may have to either get a custom theme or whether they are maybe only able to use free themes or maybe the default theme. I personally don't think a custom theme is a requirement for any forum but maybe a logo so that it has some uniqueness from other forums that may be using the same theme. In time the owner may get enough funds to be able to get a custom theme but I don't think it's something that should be rushed at all.
