When leaving a forum, do you say Goodbye?

Regardless of the reason you are leaving. If I have to leave a forum due to spam being overrun or it’s not moderated well & I honestly wouldn’t be missed, I just leave without a word. They are not around to hear my comments anyways.
Now if I made good friends & they were helpful, I try to let them know I am leaving & why. The people are nice but the forum is simply not for ME anymore.

Flipside, how do you view it when people leave YOUR forum?
I’ve had many members leave without a word. It can hurt to some degree especially when they were active posters & for one reason or another just upped & left. Maybe I offended them. Maybe another member did. If it’s not talked about, the problem cannot be fixed. I feel a forum is only as good as the members.

I do not. If I feel that the forum isn't for me, I usually just leave. I don't say why or give a reason. Usually, that is because I'm past that point or I've witnessed an act of moderation that isn't for me. Egotistic and arrogant moderators will cause me to do that.

Luckily, this hasn't happened on many forums I join.

For my own forum, I suppose I'd allow Goodbye Topics as long as they didn't get out of hand and toxic.

In the end, posting a Goodbye Thread is a way of begging for attention. Look at me. Feel sorry for me. Maybe attention is what that person needs to make their life better? Hmmm.

My few cents.

I don't usually state I'm leaving a forum. As for people not returning to mine, I usually just assume they've moved on if they've been a long time member who doesn't log in anymore.

I'm always saying hello via saying good morning to afternoon to goodnight or even just staying yo yo 😉 On FP in my case or another bigger websites with good replies after 🙂 Not on my site that I do not do it, not often anyway

It depends on what circumstances I'm leaving under.

If the forum is dying or something like that, then I'll leave without a word.

If I just need to take some time off from the internet, I'll say goodbye.

I really had to think about this one. Usually I just leave if the forum genre no longer interests me. However, if I'm leaving because I did not have a good experience because of hostile members or staff I do let the admins know. In the past I've found that these folks don't really care because they are quick to back up their staff but understandably their communities don't take off anyway.

From my experiences, people who announce their departure because they are unhappy with the forum or member(s) are just attention seekers. They claim to leave but they are glued to that thread waiting to see what everyone has to say about them leaving. If you check your "Who is Online" page you'll probably even see them viewing that thread while logged out (if you compare IP addresses). Most of the time those members return after they get over whatever was bothering them.

If I am leaving someone else's forum, I'll just logout and wont return.

I don't say good buy when I am leaaving. I just abandon my account. However, if I am leaving, I make sure to check my account and delete of I have any personally identifying details.

I can't say I have ever stated that I was leaving a forum, I just kind of stopped visiting the forum if I choose to leave. Usually, I will only leave if I start to dislike the community and how the forum is run but I will also sometimes leave due to personal reasons and just not having the time. I don't feel a need to let them know I am leaving and as long as the forum is still up and running as it was when I feel ready to come back, I just come back and start being active again.

If I were a staff member retiring and leaving, I'd probably announce my departure. But, if I were just an average member I would probably just leave without saying goodbye, which is very common on forums. If people needed/wanted to get in contact with me they can generally follow the links in my signature/profile.

I don't really recall ever leaving a forum although a few have left me by shutting down.

Goodbye topics are just for attention. There really isn't that much of a purpose to them, at all. If I don't want to be there, why should I announce I'm leaving? And if I don't have time for the forum, why would I spend more time to make a post saying I'm leaving?

No because the door might hit me on the way out!

I'm the same, once a Fourm is pointless I start to be less active to the point that I don't bother coming back..

No because the door might hit me on the way out!
when is a door not a door

If it's a forum I care about I'll send a private message along to the owner or staff members to let them know I'm stepping away, but mostly no, I just don't visit anymore

I usually don't, because I don't know if I'll be back or not. Most of the time i'll simply log out or let my session expire and if I don't feel like returning to said forum, I simply won't.
