Deleted member 49125

I have read before that if a member asks for their account to be deleted, you need to honor the request. However, I’ve been on forums before where they have specifically said they will not delete accounts. Or is that just for i.e. inactive accounts, that they still will if you ask.
Anybody know the “rule” for this? Do you delete accounts when asked?

If someone asks me to delete their account, I’ll honor their request. I’m part of at least one forum that doesn’t delete accounts and I’m not sure why. I guess they figure the person could just change their password and log out of their account and never log back in. I usually leave the “member can delete their own account” feature on because at the end of the day if they no longer wish to be part of my community anymore they can easily delete their account without having to wait for staff to do it.

I do not allow there content/posts to be removed if they want their accounts deleted it can be hidden or in my case removed but not there content

If it's to do with conflict against me or whatever I give them a chance to cool and decide upon the request. We did have someone ask to delete their account at MP but after a bit of cooling space after I had a talk with them they wanted to stay.

Yeah, but not right away. If anyone demands their account be deleted, I’ll have them wait for a month or so to cool off. I’ve seen a few people have their accounts deleted in anger, then they regret it later.

If they’re persistent in having their account deleted (and still want it deleted a month or two later) then I’ll honor the request.

This has not happened to me. However, I would not delete it if the user has received some sort of incentive for posting on my site. If the poster is volunbter, I might delete the account provided there is a valid reason.

The truth is that the user has all the right to demand his account to be deleted and you as the forum owner has a responsibility to delete the account. You are free to pacify but if the user still insists, incentive or not, you must delete the account.

I won’t delete their account. What I’ve done is change the user name to a generic one and delete the personal info which includes their email and IP address. All their content stays, unless it’s personal photos. I also have that stated upon registering on my forums. Never had an issue.

I just hide there account so that they can't log in and or can't see there account even if it's not deleted and after 30 days if they have not returned then it gets removed.

How would they return when they can't log in? How would you know they have returned?

You can tell when they just make another account and at times they would have the same IP and much of the same username and email address. Or they end up making another account in that 30 days and PM the staff members stating that I'm back can I get my account back XD

You can tell, even here on FP I see so many new accounts that after awhile you can see who they are when they start posting and the way that they talk in there posts

This can be very erroneous in assuming who a person is based on post styles. I have seen where two people have the same posting styles.

After 20 years on doing FOurms you tend to learn to not always merge them Xd

I still have had no issue deleting accounts. With the addon I have on my forum, your email and avatar will be removed. Your privacy settings will be set to 'no one/nobody' too. It gives people 1 week to login and cancel the request. I figure a week is long enough to let a person decide if they are serious.

If a member's account is found to be in violation of local or international laws, it may be necessary to delete their account to comply with legal requirements such as the GDPR.
