What do you say to a member who doesn't like your forum's rules...and posts that he's being persecuted?

Too bad, lol.

Venting in public and speaking against the staff is also against the rules. Their posts will be moved to a private forum for a private chat and he might be placed in moderation for the time being.

One person? As the saying goes, exceptions do not make the rules. If it is one person that has problem with the rules, then the probability is high that the rules are not the problem.
I’ll just thank him/her for stopping by.

I probably need to learn to do that. That's good advice 🙂

Really depends. If it was my own personal forum, I wouldn't mind too much, unless there was an issue that literally should have been kept private. I don't mind it when someone needs to vent, but some things shouldn't be public.

The rules on a forum are in place for a reason, so if one person doesn't like them then adios. That sounds mean but if it's one person out of a hundred members then, it won't effect the site at all.

Just my thoughts.

I've come across a couple of members who don't feel they need to abide by the rules. I was called ridiculous for even mentioning our rule to one member recently. I guess his lack of respect shows his character? What do you think?

Being staff on many sites, I've come to the conclusion that try to see what they can and can't get away with. When someone, staff or not, calls them out for it then yes, the person is being ridiculous. But in actuality, the member not abiding by the rules is really the ridiculous one.

Sorry, that happened to you. 🥺 Who are we beating up? lol

I'll message you. That person seems to have shared the conversation, so it's obviously not very confidential anymore, is it?

Doesn't seem like it.

If you’re going to have rules in place, you have to be willing to enforce them. Otherwise it’s just talk, and there’s no accountability. When you deal with a user causing trouble in this manner, sometimes it’s good to take a step back and allow a fellow staff member to step in as well. That way you guys can maintain order, without it seeming like a scenario of someone claiming that they are being persecuted by one particular individual.

That can be difficult though, because then you risk appearing as if you are ganging up on the individual as a group. It’s a fine line, and there’s no secret solution to it.

I break rules all the time 😛 hahaha

I mean Not banned yet 😛

My rules are there for a reason. For some of them I could simply warn someone first, but others are a hard bannable offense and would be out in one strike. I don't like confronting a member on something silly, but if gentle nudges don't work, I will.

Being on a forum is not a do or die affair. So, when they don't like my rules, they are welcome to leave. I believe forum owners make rules, putting a lot of factors into consideration, and such rules should be respected.

There must be rules to keep order.
If a member doesn't like it, he/she can always make their own forum and see how it goes.

Maintaining a community is not an easy task, and all members should consider that at all times by appreciating and respecting the rules.

My users are free to express their opinions and they are even allowed to disapprove certain thigs on public forums. For every legitimate disagreement, I try to make changes.

You can never please anyone and there will always be someone that is not happy or never happy with the rules you make, most of the time because they want to do what the rules state they can not do.

I have always said that if it is just one person who has an issue and no one else then I will not change the rule for that one person. If they do not like it, they can go elsewhere but I guarantee anywhere else would probably have the same or a similar rule.

There are other forums. No one is making them be there. No one is also making them break your rules either if they're going to dishonestly play the victim.
