When you run contests, how much do you put into them?

Running a contest on any site boosts engagement and traffic, there's no question. You know, something fun to get people talking and participating. But here's the thing—How much should we be putting into it?

By "putting into it," I mean both time and money. Like, what's a good budget for prizes that actually get people excited? And how much time do you spend setting everything up and promoting it? We don't want to break the bank, but we also don't want the contest to be a flop because it didn't have enough to attract people.

So, any tips on what kind of contests work best for you? I've seen giveaways, design contests, trivia, etc. What's been the most successful in your experience?

Here's how I do my contests:

I like trying to come up with new ideas and make it fun. On FP, that's easy to do. On Christianity Haven, they don't want contests, even if it's for money!

Back when I had a gaming forum, we had an art contest where users would create a poster depicting a certain game that they could choose from (we had a list of games that a participant could pick). The winner would get that game as a prize.

This worked out well and it was fun seeing all the entries and activity it was mustering up.

I might still have them somewhere but I'd have to look around since it was a while ago.

Maybe I did not promote to the people who would be interested in joining contest. Maybe the reward was not just enough for people to join the contest.
