There are a few hints you have to learn to be a decent designer, in my opinion:
1. Color Theory: you have to have an idea for what colors go well together. This is best learned from books on web design or design in general, which can be bought from a local bookstore.
2. Style. The difference between flat and glossy designs, and some of the terminology which you might pick up in an art class, or even art history.
3. Using the Software: this is pretty easy, if you have good software. You can find videos on how to use illustrator and other tools off of YouTube. This is probably the best source.
These are at least the things I had to learn to get pretty good at making some basic stuff. To do really advanced illustrations, I think you need to have experience with drawing on a peice of paper. Either art school or a lot of reading and practice.
Years ago I found PS on a computer of my parents and got curious, many terrible designs were made, but over time I would watch tutorials and eventually got the hang of it. Mainly self taught and the best method for me so far was to just do it and try again and repeat.
I sort of self-taught myself how to design, like most. I also joined several forums that catered to amateur designers and sought to give support to them.
My first design was in photo shop. I made my first design by experimenting some features in PS. Google and other websites dedicated to design is where I got more information.
Practical experience is the most important, in my opinion. You learn what looks good and what doesn't and how to use the software. Once you get the software down, it's all about experimenting with colors, styles, and techniques.
I'm not good at all, but I'm getting that practical experience!
I have learn graphic designing online. It takes me so much time to learn but finally did it but not completely. I try to read as much as possible about graphic designing to keep myself updated.
Most of my experience just came from self teaching and trying to copy others. I'm not the best at graphics design, my skills are pretty limited, however they are there.
Pretty much just taught myself through trial and error. Started off practicing with GIMP before I went on to purchase photoshop and illustrator. All started with youtube tutorials!
I learned just from self teaching, i just searched up tutorials and sometimes asked some of my Graphic designer friends to show me a few things. If you understand the basics of whatever program you may be using the tutorials will be a breeze and you will be a awesome graphic designer befroe you know it 🙂
Actually it's pretty amazing how many free resources are available online. Some tutorials are broken down via pictures and text, alternatively there are numerous tutorials available on YouTube. If you have the time and patience there are a lot of designing techniques that can be self-taught by using tutorials online.
Personally, in the past whenever I would see someone design something I really like I would reach out to them and most of them are happy to explain in detail to their approach while others were willing to send me links to tutorials on how to do them.
When I started graphic and Web design over ten years ago, I learned the trade using tutorials that I found on Google, Good-Tutorials.com, and Solid Snake designs (among other graphic design forums). I can honestly say that I've never followed a video tutorial on how to do anything related to graphic and Web design.
